Overview

A deeper journey of queer heritage, royal hospitality and cultural connection.

From the spice-laden lanes of Old Delhi to the palace-dotted landscapes of Rajasthan and the warm community spirit of Gujarat, the Prince and Palaces Unveiled Tour invites you into an India that few travellers ever experience. This is not a quick highlights reel. It is a thoughtfully expanded 14-day exploration designed to slow the pace, reveal richer layers of meaning and immerse you in India’s royal, cultural and queer heartlands.

You will wander buzzing bazaars, explore ancient temples, discover ornate palaces and experience the warmth of rural village life. Along the way, you will meet the people who shape queer India today, including local storytellers, LGBTQ advocates and the influential Hijra community of Vadodara.

At the heart of this journey is something truly rare. You will share an intimate lunch and audience with Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil at QueerBagh in Rajpipla. His story, from closeted royal to global LGBTQ+ activist, offers a personal and powerful insight into India’s queer movement and its ongoing evolution.

For 2026, we have elevated the experience even further. The itinerary now features a premium suite of upgraded 4-star and heritage hotels, an exclusive stepwell dinner at Narlai, a special transgender community visit and longer stays in key destinations. The overall pace is more relaxed, giving you space to unwind and savour each location at a gentler rhythm.

This year’s journey takes you through Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Deogarh, Narlai, Udaipur, Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Rajpipla, a balanced blend of iconic highlights, rural immersion and meaningful LGBTQ+ encounters.

The Gay Layer

This journey is proudly LGBTQ+ by design. For 2026, we are amplifying the Gay Layer through deeper and more meaningful connections with local LGBTQ+ communities, queer owned businesses and grassroots organisations across India.

Rather than simply visiting landmarks, you are invited into spaces where queer life is lived and celebrated. From conversations with local advocates to dining in LGBTQ+ owned venues, this tour creates genuine points of connection that go well beyond surface-level inclusion.

This journey also supports important community initiatives. A portion of the tour contributes to The Lakshya Trust, the charitable organisation founded by Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil, which provides advocacy, education and practical support for LGBTQ+ and transgender people in India. In addition, through our on-the-ground visits and community engagements, we directly support local transgender and Hijra groups and refuge initiatives working at a grassroots level.

Throughout the journey, you will meet people working for visibility, dignity and change. These encounters are respectful, welcoming and often deeply personal. They add a powerful human dimension to the palaces, cities and history you explore.

The Gay Layer is not an add-on or a theme. It is woven into the fabric of the itinerary, shaping how we travel, where we go and who we meet. The result is an experience that feels affirming, connected and grounded in real community.

This is travel with purpose, pride and perspective.

Going solo?

Travelling on your own? You’ve got options.

We offer a Share With a Stranger program, allowing solo travellers to be matched in a twin share room and avoid paying the single supplement. Simply indicate your interest on the booking form and we’ll do our best to find a suitable match. You’ll be introduced before confirming, so there are no surprises.

Prefer your own space? No problem. You can choose a private room by adding the single supplement of just $1497 and enjoy solo accommodation throughout the journey.

Accommodation and Hotels

Throughout the tour, you will stay in a thoughtfully selected collection of hotels chosen for comfort, character and cultural connection.

Following our 2025 Discovery Tour, we have refined and upgraded the accommodation program for 2026. Guest feedback and on-the-ground learnings have guided us toward a stronger focus on heritage properties and distinctive hotels that offer a deeper sense of place. As a result, this journey features more historic palaces, havelis and boutique residences, many rich in story, architecture and atmosphere.

From the grandeur of Deogarh Mahal to the elegance of Rawla Narlai, these heritage properties provide an immersive contrast to India’s modern cities. They are complemented by high-quality international and Indian hotel brands that deliver contemporary comfort and reliable service where appropriate.

Each hotel has been selected for its location, hospitality and unique personality. Some are family-run heritage homes filled with history, while others offer polished modern amenities and ease. Together, they create a well-balanced and memorable accommodation experience across the journey.

Your stay in Delhi is at The LaLiT New Delhi, a proudly LGBTQ+-owned 5-star hotel and one of the city’s leading luxury properties, setting the tone for the journey from the very beginning.

A full list of hotels, including official website links, can be found in the FAQ section below.

Please note

  • Hotel categories range from heritage properties to 4 and 5 star hotels.

Meet the Gay Prince of India

Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil is a trailblazer, activist, and global symbol of queer courage. As India’s first openly gay royal, his decision to live openly reshaped public conversation around sexuality, tradition, and human rights, both in India and internationally.

For many guests on our 2025 tour, meeting the Prince was the most meaningful and memorable moment of the entire journey. This is not a staged appearance or a fleeting audience. It is a genuine, personal exchange grounded in openness, generosity, and lived experience.

On this tour, you will be welcomed to QueerBagh, the Prince’s private country estate and LGBTQIA+ community campus near Rajpipla in Gujarat’s Narmada district. Here, we gather for a relaxed hosted lunch and conversation in a setting that reflects his values, advocacy, and vision for inclusive community spaces.

Guests are also invited to enjoy time at the Prince’s spring-fed swimming pool, freshly filled with natural water and later recycled to irrigate the surrounding orchard. It is a uniquely relaxed and joyful moment that perfectly captures the spirit of QueerBagh. Open, sustainable, and deeply human.

Set away from formality and public spectacle, this experience offers rare insight into the Prince’s personal story, his ongoing work through the Lakshya Trust, and the lived realities of LGBTQ+ people in India today.

It is a powerful, human moment that stays with you long after the journey ends.

“My coming out was not just about me. It was about giving voice to others who felt they couldn’t speak.”

It is each traveller’s responsibility to ensure they have the appropriate visa for entry into India and that their passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of departure from India.

We strongly recommend applying at least 4 weeks before departure to avoid any processing delays.

Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is a mandatory requirement for this tour.

Travel insurance must be arranged at the time of booking, or shortly thereafter, and must cover the full duration of your trip.

Travel insurance provides essential protection against unexpected events such as medical emergencies, tour cancellations, travel disruptions, or lost luggage. Medical care and emergency evacuation in India can be expensive and are not covered by Medicare or Australian private health insurance.

Your policy should include, at a minimum:

  • Overseas medical and hospital cover
  • Emergency evacuation and repatriation
  • Trip cancellation and interruption cover
  • Cover for pre-existing medical conditions, where applicable
  • Lost, stolen, or delayed baggage

If you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.

We’ll always do our best to assist — and advocate on your behalf with our partners.

Hotel Summary

Your journey features a carefully curated collection of 5-star, 4-star, and heritage hotels, chosen for comfort, character, and location.

Many properties are restored palaces or boutique heritage residences with strong local personality. While star ratings in India differ from Australian standards, each hotel has been selected for service quality and guest experience.

Where two-night stays occur, you can enjoy a slower pace and the convenience of unpacking once. These stays are also ideal for arranging a local bag wash, which is inexpensive in India and typically costs around INR 500–800 for a full bundle.

Notes

  • Heritage properties often feature unique room layouts and architectural character that differ from modern hotel design.
  • Rooms are in the lead in room category and typically include ensuite bathroom, air conditioning and Wi-Fi.
  • Hotel substitutions may occur due to operational or seasonal requirements, with properties of a similar or higher standard provided.
  • Multi-night stays provide additional comfort and convenience. These stops are also ideal for arranging a local bag wash, which is inexpensive in India and usually costs around INR 500 to 800 for a full bundle.
  • Additional nights in Delhi can be arranged before or after the tour if required.

Hotel Upgrades & Extra Nights (Optional)

For guests who would like additional space, upgraded room categories, or a smoother arrival into India, we offer a small number of optional accommodation enhancements. These are entirely optional and can be added at the time of booking, subject to availability.

All upgrade pricing applies for the full tour duration, not on a nightly basis, unless otherwise stated.

Pre-Tour Extra Night – New Delhi

If you are arriving into Delhi early, we recommend adding an extra night at our opening hotel to allow time to rest and adjust before the tour begins.

Hotel: The LaLiT New Delhi
Room type: Lead-in category
Includes: Breakfast and taxes

Price:

  • AUD $397 per room, per night (single or double)

This option is particularly popular for guests arriving on early-morning international flights.

Room Category Upgrade – Whole Tour (Selected)

This option upgrades your accommodation from the standard room to the next room category across the tour, where available. It provides additional comfort and consistency, without moving to full suite accommodation.

Room category upgrades apply at selected hotels, including:

  • The LaLiT New Delhi
  • Alsisar Haveli, Jaipur
  • Rawla Narlai
  • Fortune Landmark, Ahmedabad
  • Four Points by Sheraton, Vadodara

Room naming varies by property (for example, Deluxe, Premier, or Club rooms), but all represent a step above the standard tour allocation.

Price (full tour):

  • AUD $517 per person – twin share

  • AUD $1034 per person – solo traveller

VIP Suite Upgrade – Limited Availability

For guests seeking the highest level of comfort and privacy, a VIP Suite upgrade is available across the tour, subject to availability.

This upgrade secures the highest available room category at each property. In some heritage hotels, the top category may be described as a Deluxe room rather than a Suite, but represents the best accommodation available at that hotel.

Price (full tour):

  • AUD $1437 per person – twin share (double room)

  • AUD $2874 per person – solo traveller (single room)

VIP Suite upgrades are limited in number and are best requested early.

Important Notes on Upgrades

  • All upgrades are subject to availability at the time of confirmation.

  • Heritage hotels may use different room naming conventions, but upgrades always reflect the highest or next-highest category available.

  • Hotel substitutions, if required, will be made at a similar or higher standard, with upgrade benefits honoured where possible.

  • Upgrade pricing will be confirmed at the time of booking and added to your tour invoice.

Are airfares included in the tour price?

No. International airfares are not included.

We understand that guests may be flying from different cities and on different schedules, so airfares are excluded to keep your travel flexible. However, we are very happy to assist with booking your flights or recommending suitable options based on your location, preferences, and budget.

As a general guide, return economy fares from Australia to New Delhi typically range from AUD 1,000 to 1,400, depending on airline, routing, and timing. Premium Economy fares with full-service airlines such as Singapore Airlines or Cathay Pacific generally start from around AUD 3,300+ return.

Our preferred departure date from Australia is Sunday, 18 October 2026, with most flights arriving into Delhi on Monday, 19 October 2026, in time for the tour to commence.

Best fares are often available from Perth. If you are open to positioning via Western Australia, this can sometimes offer significant savings.

We are also exploring a group airfare option, which may provide added value and simplicity, subject to minimum numbers.

Need help? Just get in touch. As a full-service travel agency, Points of Difference Travel & Events can manage flights, extensions, insurance, and more to ensure your journey begins and ends smoothly.

Baggage Allowance

In addition to any allowances for your international flights, please be aware of the following allowances:

  • Domestic flight (Ahmedabad to Delhi):
    • 15 kg checked baggage
    • 7 kg cabin baggage
    • Additional baggage fees apply if these limits are exceeded.
  • We can advise on fees in due course.

What is QueerBagh?

QueerBagh is the private country estate and LGBTQIA+ community campus of Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil, located near Rajpipla in Gujarat’s Narmada district.

Formerly part of the Royal Establishment of Hanumanteshwar, QueerBagh has been reimagined as a space for advocacy, community connection, and inclusive social engagement. It is both the Prince’s home and a working campus that supports LGBTQIA+ visibility and empowerment in India.

As part of the tour, guests are welcomed to QueerBagh for a hosted visit and lunch with the Prince in a relaxed, informal setting.

Will we meet Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil in person?

Yes. A visit with Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil, India’s first openly gay royal, is a confirmed and cornerstone experience of the tour.

This is not a public talk or staged appearance. Guests meet the Prince personally at QueerBagh, with time for shared conversation, questions, and reflection in a private setting.

What is The Lakshya Trust?

The Lakshya Trust is a charitable organisation founded by Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil to support LGBTQIA+ people in India.

The Trust focuses on advocacy, education, health initiatives, and community support, with a particular emphasis on transgender and marginalised groups. Its work has played a significant role in advancing visibility, dignity, and rights for LGBTQIA+ communities across India.

A portion of this tour supports the ongoing work of The Lakshya Trust.

Does the tour support local LGBTQIA+ communities?

Yes. In addition to supporting The Lakshya Trust, the tour includes meaningful engagement with local LGBTQIA+ communities during our travels.

This includes visits and interactions with community groups, transgender and hijra organisations, and LGBTQ-owned or operated businesses, where appropriate. These experiences are approached respectfully and thoughtfully, with a focus on learning, connection, and mutual exchange.

Is the visit to QueerBagh respectful and appropriate?

Absolutely. All visits to QueerBagh and community organisations are conducted with care, respect, and consent.

Guests are briefed in advance, and participation in any optional activities is entirely at your discretion. The experience is designed to be welcoming, comfortable, and culturally sensitive for all travellers.

How will we stay connected during the tour?

Staying connected is an important part of how this tour operates.

All guests are required to join our private WhatsApp group for the duration of the tour. This is our primary communication channel and is essential for sharing daily schedules, meeting times, updates, and any time-sensitive information while travelling.

The WhatsApp group includes:

  • An Announcements channel (read-only) used by the hosts and guides for official updates
  • A General chat where guests are welcome to connect, share tips, and ask questions

Joining and remaining active in the WhatsApp group is a condition of participation, as it ensures smooth communication and group coordination throughout the journey.

Connectivity during the tour

Most hotels on the itinerary offer complimentary Wi-Fi, which is suitable for messaging, email, and general browsing.

For connectivity while out and about, guests can use:

  • International roaming plans with their home provider
  • A local Indian SIM card (available at Delhi Airport)
  • An eSIM, which many guests find the easiest option

During our most recent tour, we had excellent results using VOYE Global, an eSIM service that can be installed before departure. This avoids airport kiosks, passport checks, and physical SIM swaps, and allows you to stay connected as soon as you land.

We are currently confirming whether Wi-Fi will also be available on our private touring vehicle, and will advise guests closer to departure once this is finalised.

How much spending money should I allow?

India is very affordable for day-to-day expenses.

Most guests find that AUD300–500 in total spending money is more than sufficient for the tour. Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and shops, and ATM access is readily available in cities. There are opportunities to purchase various items such as textiles, jewellery, and marble/inlaid items, which would require a higher budget.

For the best exchange rates:

  • Use ATMs in-country, or
  • Exchange AUD or EUR at city money changers
  • Use a pre-loaded travel card like WISE.

Airport exchange desks typically offer poorer rates and are best avoided.

If you prefer to travel with cash, INR can be pre-ordered through providers such as Amex a few days prior to departure.

What should I know about water, health, and hygiene?

Your hotels provide bottled water daily, and our touring vehicle carries chilled bottled water on travel days.

Some travellers choose to bring supplements such as Travelan, taken before meals to help reduce the risk of traveller’s diarrhoea. This is optional and should always be discussed with your GP prior to travel.

We recommend using bottled water for drinking and brushing teeth, and practising regular hand hygiene throughout the journey.

Before travelling, please consult your GP or travel health clinic to ensure your vaccinations are up to date and appropriate for India. Common vaccinations may include tetanus and hepatitis A or B, depending on your medical history and travel background. Travellers coming from other countries may have additional vaccination requirements.

Your health and comfort are important, and a short pre-travel check-in with your GP can help ensure you’re well prepared.

What should I pack and wear?

Expect daytime temperatures of around 20–30°C, depending on location.

Pack light, breathable clothing and comfortable walking shoes. Modest attire is required for religious sites, including long pants or skirts and covered shoulders. A head covering will be needed when visiting Sikh temples.

Practical tips:

  • Thongs or flip-flops are handy for temple visits where shoes must be removed
  • Bring socks for temple visits
  • Swimwear is useful, as many hotels have pools, including at the Prince’s residence
  • No formal or dressy attire is required at any point on the tour, though guests have been known to “drag up a bit” ;-)

How does luggage and the daily touring flow work?

We change hotels most days, so packing efficiently is recommended.

The internal flight baggage allowance is 15 kg checked luggage, with excess charges payable if exceeded.

Most mornings begin around 9:00-9:30 am, though exact start times are confirmed each evening by your guide. India rewards flexibility, and the tour flow allows room to adjust pacing based on conditions and group interests.

We’ve adjusted the schedule to allow slightly more relaxed travel times and more “me time”. But some early morning starts are required, particularly visiting the Taj Mahal for sunrise.

Will there be a pre-departure briefing?

Yes.

Before departure, we’ll host a short pre-departure Zoom call with the group, joined by our local partners at Soul of India Tours. This is a chance to meet fellow travellers, walk through final logistics, and ask any last-minute questions.

Details will be shared closer to departure.

What is the current status of LGBTQ+ rights in India?

India has made notable legal strides in recognising LGBTQ+ rights, though significant challenges remain.

  • Decriminalisation of Homosexuality: In September 2018, the Supreme Court of India decriminalised consensual same-sex relations by striking down parts of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code. This landmark decision affirmed the rights to privacy, dignity, and equality for LGBTQ+ individuals. (ILGA Asia)
  • Recognition of Transgender Individuals: In 2014, the Supreme Court recognised transgender people as a ‘third gender’ (also referred to as hijras) in the National Legal Services Authority v. Union of India case. This ruling granted transgender individuals the right to self-identify their gender and access fundamental rights. (UPPCSMagazine)
  • Same-Sex Marriage: As of now, same-sex marriages are not legally recognised in India. In 2023, the Supreme Court declined to grant marriage rights to same-sex couples, emphasising that such recognition falls within the legislative domain.
  • Adoption Rights: Same-sex couples currently do not have the legal right to adopt children in India.
  • Anti-Discrimination Protections: While the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, prohibits discrimination against transgender individuals, there are no comprehensive anti-discrimination laws protecting individuals based on sexual orientation. (The Revealer)
  • Social Climate: Despite legal advancements, societal attitudes towards LGBTQ+ individuals in India remain mixed. Many LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly in rural areas, continue to face stigma, discrimination, and lack of acceptance.

This tour is designed with safety, discretion, and respectful engagement in mind, supported by experienced local partners and LGBTQ+-affirming hosts.
